About Us

Eastbourne and Wealden YMCA is perhaps one of Eastbourne’s best kept secrets – we have quietly made a difference in Eastbourne, Hailsham and further afield across East Sussex but few could tell you what we do.  Despite some 35+ different projects most think that the YMCA is either ‘a song’ or perhaps a gym. The time has come to change that and invite others to join with us in achieving the best possible communities we can. Eastbourne and Wealden YMCA is far more than just a song…..

About Eastbourne and Wealden YMCA

  • We remain a LOCAL charity, based in Eastbourne, with local Trustees
  • We have a strong Christian ethos and roots that can be traced back to Victorian times.
  • Eastbourne and Wealden YMCA was essentially reborn in 1984 when some determined local people came together to find a way to help young people whose lives were being ruined through substance misuse.
  • Eastbourne and Wealden YMCA exists as a fully independent Christian charity, with trustees drawn from a variety of local churches.
  • We now have over 60 employees & volunteers

Our aim is simpleto improve the lives of people - especially children, young people & the elderly - in the communities in which they live.  We want to help those who find themselves at the bottom of the pile, homeless, hurting, disengaged, in trouble with the authorities, with little hope or direction.

 Our areas of activity include:

  • Housing - 6 supported housing projects, caring for 50 homeless young people in Eastbourne and Wealden
  • Youth and Community - a drop in centre, youth activities across the town and the Eastbourne Youth Forum
  • Information and Guidance - Careers advice service, homelessness prevention workshops and Wise Up programme, all delivered in schools, plus our chaplaincy service
  • Children's Sports Courses - multi-sports courses, swimming lessons and annual adventurous activity weekend
  • Expeditions and Experiential Learning - our highly successful Inner Journey trip to South Africa and our Ypres 'loss' project
  • Retirement Action - currently providing fitness sessions in retirement homes across the town
